Second Person Cured of HIV After Stem Cell Transplant
Recent research published in The Lancet demonstrates that the second patient ever has been cured of HIV after receiving a stem cell transplant from researcher from the University of Cambridge. Following the transplant and 30 months after the patient ceased antiretroviral therapy, physicians confirmed that the HIV viral load was undetectable. The researchers noted however that the curative treatment is "high risk and only used as a last resort for patient with HIV who also have life threatening hematology malignancies"
Boston Physicians Push For Nutritional Prescriptions
Physicians based in Boston are working to create a federal program that would focus on writing prescription for food. "The doctors could write prescriptions for fresh vegetables and healthy foods that the patients could pick up at the on-site pantry." explained Dr. Stephanie Moore an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. The program is set to begin this year in Boston with funding from private donations, federal and foundation grants, and VA reimbursement mechanisms.
Researchers Identify Connection Between Molds and Asthma
Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have identified a new way in which common Aspergillus mold can induce asthma through first attacking the protective tissue barrier deep in the lungs. The research provide a new understanding of the connection between mold and asthma which has the potential to aid in the prevention of the development of future asthma cases.
